Safely handle bituminous materials – RIICBS203D


Designed by industry to meet the Austroads guidelines, this competency based course is required to protect the health and safety of workers, reduce the risk of injury and highlight your safety responsibilities.

Mapped to the Nationally recognised unit of competency, participant assessment for the theory component is required. A workbook shall be satisfactorily completed throughout the course.
To receive the Statement of Attainment (SoA), participants must submit their completed workbook and the practical on-the-job documentation required by RudTek.

This course provides essential instruction on safety for ALL personnel involved in storing, handling, working near, or supervising the use of, hot bituminous materials and asphalt.
The competency mapped course consists of formal presentations, highlight videos of hazards, guidance and selection on the correct use of fire extinguishers.
Covers risk minimisation strategies for common hazards present on bituminous surfacing sites including burns, boilovers, explosions, fire, inhalation of fumes and reversing plant.

Who should do this course?
Anyone working within the proximity of hot bitumen or asphalt and requiring proof of the industry approved AfPA endorsed course being completed.
Sealing and asphalt crews, tanker drivers and bitumen storage site operators, supervisors, managers, contractors on a site or plant and non-field staff involved in directing others to use bitumen products.

The AfPA Course has been mapped to the theory/knowledge component outcomes required to meet RIICBS203D – Safely Handle Bituminous Materials.
If participants required the Statement of Attainment to achieve the nationally recognised RIICBS203D unit of competency, further information is required to be sent to AfPA’s course endorsed RTO – RudTek.

At the conclusion of this course participants will be able to:

  • identify basic hazards associated with hot bitumen and asphalt road surfacing
  • identify specific hazards and safety procedures associated with the handling, blending, transportation, transferring and spraying of bitumen
  • describe hazards involved in the maintenance and repair of bitumen equipment
  • detail first aid for bitumen burns.

This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to safely handle bituminous materials in Civil Construction.
